Topic: “Institutional Childhood: Contemporary Educational Challenges”
Recent research of childhood has been directed towards viewing issues from the perspective of the child, thereby validating the child’ s experience, its autonomy, and developmental perspectives, within the real context of its living as the crux of the issue. Due to these reasons, we have witnessed an affirmation of an alternative qualitative understanding of the child in the conditions of contemporary childhood, which, as such, has become a research area for those that include the issues of children’s development and education among their scientific interests. These new concepts finally establish new paradigms of early and preschool education/primary school education, which encompass the ideas of the necessity of altering the relationship between children and adults (within the family as well as within institutions), of a co-construction of the curriculum based on the notion of the educator/teacher as a reflective practitioner, of an educational institution (the kindergarten/school) as a learning community, and of the pedagogical theory which results from an active reflection and research of educational practice.
We want to indicate to a dynamic relationship amongst structural conditions in society, challenges in educational policy, and children as co-constructors of self identities and culture and active contributors to the creation of their own childhood. We thereby ensure children’s perspectives and children’s rights as the key words in the concurrent global research.
We invite you to reexamine the manners in whichsocial and cultural changes of contemporary childhood can be and should be the starting points for a construction of quality study programs for education of university students, namely future educators in early and preschool education as well as teachers in primary education.
